A Forum For Progress

Our foundational ethos

Welcome to Hilin, a research organisation committed to deepening understanding of development, governance, and politics in the Somali Peninsula. We generate grounded insights, foster inclusive dialogue, and catalyse transformative change across the region. Our work is shaped by a clear vision, rooted in local knowledge, and animated by a commitment to justice, inclusion, and resilience.

Name and Symbolism

Hilin means “path,” reflecting our belief in continuous exploration, humility, and collective progress. The name underscores our commitment to inclusive solutions and the value of every step forward. Our logo shows a path leading to a sunrise, framed by stars. The path denotes purpose and direction; the four-pointed star represents Somali communities in Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Djibouti; the sun symbolises knowledge, prosperity, and the Somali sun-based calendar.

Scale and Scope

We operate across multiple scales—from local settings to global influences—while focusing geographically on Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Kenya. Our research explores governance systems, border dynamics, and regional transformations.

Vision and Mission

We envision a future where diverse perspectives shape policy and governance across the Somali Peninsula. Our aim is to become a leading research institution producing actionable, inclusive analysis that strengthens democratic practice and builds regional resilience.

We conduct rigorous, context-sensitive research to inform policy and practice. Through evidence-based advocacy and collaboration with policymakers, civil society, and communities, we work to foster inclusive, accountable, and transformative governance.

Core Principles

We centre indigenous knowledge systems in our work, recognising their role in understanding socio-ecological systems and cultural continuity.

We prioritise marginalised voices and inclusive processes, particularly the participation of women, youth, and minority communities.

Research Philosophy and Practice

We challenge dominant power dynamics in knowledge production by centring local agency and rejecting externally imposed research hierarchies.

We prioritise research led by those most affected, with local researchers taking the lead in design, analysis, and dissemination.

We welcome contributions from non-local scholars, but leadership and decision-making remain rooted in the local context.

We are building a platform for local researchers to collaborate, share resources, and engage in policy-relevant scholarship.

We aim to influence policy with research grounded in lived experience, cultural knowledge, and context-specific evidence.

We contribute to global decolonisation debates by modelling equitable, representative research practices and shifting power to local knowledge producers.

Our Commitment

At Hilin, research is a tool for transformation—redefining both what we know and how we act. We are reclaiming narrative agency, reshaping governance, and lighting a path toward a resilient and inclusive future for the Somali Peninsula.
